The ACdP was created in 1909 by a Jesuit, Ángel Ayala, to answer the wave of secularism which, following the model of the III French Republic, tried to expel Catholicism from society. Ángel Herrera would soon become the main leader of the Association.

The Association, through a reduced number of members, has created important institutions to try to maintain the influence of Catholicism in society. Its journals, political associations, social projects and educational institutions have had an important influence on Spain’s history.

Nowadays its main activities are developed through the CEU’s Universities and Schools, although the members of the Association work individually in different social fields.

Among the works of the ACdP is Fundación Universitaria San Pablo CEU which owns the CEU San Pablo, CEU Cardenal Herrera Universities and University CEU Fernando III, and Fundación Abat Oliba CEU, which owns Abad Oliva CEU University.
