Present at the 2023 Universia International Rectors’ Meeting

Nearly 700 university rectors and leaders from 14 countries, politicians, companies and national and international institutions met in Valencia on 8, 9 and 10 May for the V Universia International Rectors’ Meeting which, under the slogan “University and Society”, turned the city of Valencia into the world capital of higher education.

The rector of Universidad CEU San Pablo, Rosa Visiedo; the rector of Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera, Vicente Navarro; and the rector of Universidad CEU Abat Oliba, Rafael Rodríguez-Ponga attended the meeting which analysed the role of the university as a driving force for more sustainable social and economic development.

The event, chaired by Ana Botín, President of Banco Santander and Universia, was inaugurated by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and featured top-level speakers from different fields, such as the scientist and academic Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the Word Wide Web; the former Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton and chief economist of the World Bank, Larry Summers; the 2006 Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific Research, Ignacio Cirac; and the head of research strategy for conversational artificial intelligence at Google AI, Pilar Manchón, among other internationally renowned experts.

Under the slogan “University and Society”, the V Universia International Rectors’ Meeting aimed to find answers, generate synergies and strategies around three thematic axes of special interest for many challenges of today’s society in which the University can have a significant impact: lifelong learning, the promotion of entrepreneurship and innovation and the networks and interconnection between universities, companies, governments and other institutions.

In addition to academic debates, the event included other parallel activities in which the voice of students and entrepreneurs was also very much taken into account. In addition to contributing their proposals, they had the opportunity to attend Santander X Global Award for university entrepreneurship which, under the guidance of the CEO of Banco Santander, Héctor Grisi, awarded the best projects of the year.

The conclusions of the International Rectors’ Meeting were set out in the “Valencia Declaration”, which includes the commitment of the rectors to ensure that the university advances, through various specific lines of action, in its aim of continuing to contribute to the progress of society
