Studying philosophy to be happy

“If you are asked why do you study Philosophy and your answer is to be happy you will be giving the correct answer”.

CEU Universities echo these words of the Professor of Philosophy and Dean of the Faculty of Communication, Education and Arts of Universidad Abat Oliba CEU of Barcelona (UAO), Enrique Martínez.

According to Enrique Martínez the attitude of Philosophy students should be: “love, seek, achieve, retain and embrace wisdom” quoting San Agustín.

In Christian tradition, the embrace of knowledge mentioned by San Agustín has a literal sense. There is a body that needs embracing; “knowledge became flesh. Embracing this wisdom is the essence of Christian philosophy” he expresses.

Martínez believes that philosophy is studied with a “theoretical rather than utilitarian attitude”. It is about moving for the love to knowledge itself and “asking everyone who can account for truth whoever speaks it”.

At the end of this road we find the perfection of human beings, i.e. their happiness.

Professor defends the need to have studies in Philosophy. “University has to be structured by the degree in Philosophy to assemble all knowledge”.

Enrique Martínez pronounced these words at the inauguration of the second year of the Degree in Philosophy taught by Universidad Católica de Ávila (UCAV) and Universidad Abat Oliba CEU.

The degree in Philosophy based on Christian philosophy can be followed in person or online. Students have the option to attend classes from Monday to Friday at Universitat Abat Oliba CEU or do it online from anywhere around the world thanks to the online teaching platform. This format helps combine this degree with other studies or with the professional activity. It can be studied with Psychology as a double degree.
