Green employment: an opportunity in the sustainability sector

The sustainability and green economy sector is undergoing an important growth in the last years. Therefore, the necessary change of the productive model for a more sustainable economy is creating new work opportunities. This sector is without doubt a source of professional opportunities.

Green employment is the trend

Sustainability goes far beyond the sector of renewable energies as at the beginning of this decade it employed over one million people in the European Union. It is source of ever growing skilled and quality employments especially in areas with strong demand of professionals such as China, the US, Brazil or the EU itself.

Moreover, more and more traditional sectors are transforming their activity towards sustainability. It is a clear bet on growth based on the respect of the environment, on providing answers to the concerns of consumers increasingly critical and committed and on the need to fulfil the increasingly demanding legislation.

Thus, the sector of the construction and rehabilitation of buildings, with great significance in our country, has undergone a major change going green. In this line we also find agro-energetic crops for the production of fuels, such as biomass, a renewable and sustainable sourcee. The same happens with the TIC, essential to reach the Sustainable Development Objectives (ODS for its Spanish initials) and with a very important role when helping us to reduce emissions arising for example, from transport.

Likewise, sustainable tourism is reaching important figures. A vital sector in the Spanish economy could not stand aside of this trend. Around sustainable rural tourism there are many entrepreneurship opportunities in addition to benefits for communities and local economies.

The presence of an expert on sustainability is increasingly demanded to guide through the energetic transition of companies. This includes from the promotion of a change in corporate culture focused on responsible consumption to the implementation of measures for a real energetic efficiency.

On the other hand, the sector of the circular economy gains force in the industrial sector with the eco-design which focuses on sustainability from the first moment of the design of the product or service.

Sustainable mobility is also another very relevant area. With the electric vehicle as main character also includes the improvement of public transport and the rethinking of the new design of cities. Those known as “smart cities” are seen as the urban areas of the future, efficient, human and sustainable.

Other sectors on the rise are those related to water management as well as the optimization of its use and desalination in addition to the achievement of new natural resources and raw materials of vegetal origin.

The present is already sustainable

The sustainability sector requires professionals in areas such as engineering and sciences, industrial design, architecture but also in corporate management, finances or logistics. The comprehensive academic offer of CEU university centres covers all the necessary knowledge areas to develop a professional career in the green sector but we are aware that sustainability will end up being a transversal concern of all industries and business models.
